Finding Stillness in Motion: My Journey with ICM Photography
When people first encounter my art, they often ask, “How did you create this?” The answer is both simple and profound: I use my camera as a brush, painting with light and movement to capture the world not as it is, but as it feels.
Discovering ICM: A New Way of Seeing
My journey into Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) photography began with a desire to break free from the literal. Traditional photography is about capturing a moment in sharp detail, but I found myself drawn to the spaces in between - the fleeting impressions, the moods, and the memories that linger long after the moment has passed.
ICM allows me to blur the boundaries between reality and imagination. By moving my camera during a long exposure, I create images that are abstract, ethereal, and deeply personal. Each photograph is a meditation - a way to slow down, breathe, and see the world with fresh eyes.
The Artistic Process: Embracing the Unexpected
Creating ICM art is a dance between control and surrender. I choose my subject - often a tranquil landscape, a stand of trees, or the gentle curve of a hill - and then let intuition guide my movements. Sometimes I sweep the camera in a gentle arc; other times, I experiment with vertical or diagonal motions. The results are never entirely predictable, and that’s what I love most.
The process is immersive and mindful. I lose myself in the rhythm of movement, the play of light, and the subtle shifts in color. Later, when I review the images, I look for those that evoke a sense of calm, mystery, or wonder - qualities I hope to share with those who view my work.
Why I Print Large on Canvas
My images are printed large on canvas and finished with floating frames. This choice is intentional: I want viewers to feel enveloped by the scene, as if they could step into the misty forest or wander through the dreamlike hills. The scale and texture of canvas add a tactile dimension, making the experience of viewing my art both visual and physical.
What I Hope Viewers Feel
At its heart, my art is an invitation to pause and reflect. In a world that moves so quickly, I hope my work offers a moment of stillness - a chance to breathe, to remember, and to reconnect with the beauty of the natural world.
Whether you see a memory, a dream, or simply a play of color and light, I invite you to bring your own story to each piece.
