Image of Susan MacDonald

I’m Susan MacDonald, a Scottish-born artist now based in Jersey City. My work explores the quiet, shifting landscapes of Scotland - spaces where weather, memory, and light blur into abstraction.

Using intentional camera movement (ICM) - a technique where the camera is moved during long exposures - I create minimal, meditative images that invite you to linger. For me, photography is a practice in mindfulness: I wait, handheld and slow, for the moment when land and light align - when a slope becomes a line of breath, when loch and sky trade places. Each image is a singular event, a brief crossing that cannot be repeated.

My current series, Transference – Torridon & Wester Ross, follows these crossings - between loch and hill, mist and slope, motion and stillness. The palette is spare; the gestures are soft. I hope these photographs offer you a space to pause and feel the hush where light is in transit.

When I’m not making photographs, I’m a wife, dog mum, and avid reader.
